A Path to Well-Being with Candle Summers
For several decades I have dedicated myself to helping others feel more empowered and fulfilled through insight meditation and bodywork sessions. Every human being has a beautiful light within just waiting to shine, and external stresses can often block us from unlocking our full understanding of this. As a spiritual friend with healing presence, I can help you uncover and relax into who you genuinely are. May I assist you, to see clearly, your true vibrancy and joy with mindfulness and kindness meditation? Let me join you in navigating your path of understanding life’s stressors and tapping into deeper insight, compassion, wisdom and ease. You are not alone, you can reach out for what you need, and give to others when you can.
Caring Heart:
Given Freely
Greetings from Candle
Everyone is welcome. We study together and practice for the benefit of all beings and this living earth. We recognize the suffering caused by biases, prejudices, systems of
power, privilege, and oppression based on race, sex, class, age, ethnicity, religion, national origin, ability, sexual orientation, and gender identity or expression. We aspire to do no harm and to dismantle barriers that cause separation and suffering, recognizing that our freedom is interconnected with the liberation of all.
“You have power over your mind - not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.”
Marcus Aurelius
A Little About Candle’s Journey
Having a thirst for learning and a heart for service, Candle’s meditation training began in 1983 while living in Northern California, after migrating from the midwest. In an attempt to find balance in life, Ms. Summers’ first meditation experience was a 10 day mindfulness retreat with S.N. Goenka . At the recommendation of her teacher Kamala Masters, she continued to attend many meditation retreats and trainings, before she became a Community Dharma Leader at Spirit Rock Meditation Center in 2003.
As a student, she has completed courses of study in Mahasi Sayadaw’s Manual of Insight and the 10 Paramis taught by Kamala Masters and Steve Armstrong, her root teachers in Hawaii.
She has been influenced by Sayadaw U Tejaniya in the Burmese lineage and also western Buddhist teachers who teach paying attention to the breath, sensations in the body, and thoughts in the mind using mindfulness practices and natural awareness in our daily lives.
In 2013 Candle moved from Maui, Hawaii to the land of the Multnomah, Chinook and Grande Ronde tribes, known as South East Portland, Or. Having lived the island life for 35 years, and encouraged by Kamala Masters and Steve Armstrong, she managed retreats for Vipassana Metta Foundation, held a weekly mindfulness (insight) meditation sitting group, a group for those who identify as women, or non-binary, and a monthly book club for a dozen + years. At the same time she maintained a thriving massage and bodywork practice, well known and respected in her field.
Ms. Summers was invited to join the teaching council at Portland Insight Meditation Center in July, 2020. She has been teaching live stream on social media and on Zoom. She offers other online meditations and sometimes offers live and hybrid classes in SE Portland. Contact her for more info and see classes below. Candle's learning and practice never stops and she is happy to share it.
To join a group online, see the list of classes button below, check out the menu of offerings below, or book a private session today by sending an email to learn, or continue your mindful awareness meditation journey.
Candle has the aspiration to follow in the footsteps of the Buddha, who offered his teachings of awakening and freedom freely to everyone without exception. Her sessions are given as donation based classes and sliding scale option for retreats and private sessions. She is committed to making the exploration of the practices and teachings of the Buddha relevant and accessible in today’s world. It is important to welcome all people of every age, ethnicity, cultural heritage and religious background, socio- economic group, ability, sexual orientation and gender identity. A donation link will be provided to encourage generosity and to continue the time honored teachings. No one is turned away for lack of funds. If you feel inspired to give to the continuation of the teachings please contact Candle for ways to contribute. Thank you for your practice, may it be of benefit to yourself and others.

More about the practice of Generosity
Through the centuries, the priceless and freely given gift of the teachings on mindfulness has been offered by monks, nuns and lay teachers; and the practice of dāna through voluntary gifts of support have been offered by those who felt benefited by them. Without this interdependence of mutual support, these precious teachings would not have survived. It is helpful to frequently reflect on the ways generosity benefits the receiver, and at the same time deepens the giver's own practice of compassion, wisdom and letting go, which leads step by step to freedom. Through helping others, we are also helping ourselves and benefiting the larger community. I feel honored to help carry the flame of the heart of the teachings as I have learned and been taught, and am very grateful in sharing your joy in giving and mine in receiving. The amount of the giving is not important, what is is the joy in giving what feels good to you, knowing it is received joyfully.
